Night of the Vampire: Thamma Gears Up for Diwali Spectacle

Date:

A Festival Release like No Other
When Diwali 2025 arrives, it will—or so the makers hope—be marked by more than just fireworks and sweets. On October 21, Thamma, the latest from Maddock Films, makes its debut. The film confidently claims the festive slot, promising a blend of romance, myth, and the macabre, staking its claim as one of Bollywood’s boldest Diwali experiments.

For Ayushmann Khurrana, this is no ordinary release. After a string of quirky and award-winning films, he describes Thamma as his “biggest release” to date—even his first festival release in a decade-long career. The pressure is high, but so is the ambition.

Myth, Mystery, and Vampires in India
What makes Thamma stand out is its rare venture into vampirism—an element more familiar to Western gothic lore than to Indian cinematic traditions. The film signals a shift: not merely horror with jumpscares, but a mythology-rooted romance with supernatural stakes.

Set across two timelines, the narrative links the present day with the bygone era of the Vijayanagar kingdom. At its heart is Alok Goyal (Ayushmann), a historian turned reluctant vampire, and Tadaka (Rashmika Mandanna), an enigmatic immortal whose love story is entangled with betrayal, tragedy, and dark secrets. The film reportedly edges away from pure horror, moving toward “romantic comedy infused with supernatural elements.”

The screenplay is credited to Niren Bhatt, Suresh Mathew, and Arun Falara. In interviews, Bhatt has resisted comparisons to The Vampire Diaries, emphasising that their source is India’s own folklore and mythic wellsprings.

Universe Building: The Next Chapter of Maddock Horror
Thamma is part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU), which includes Stree (2018), Bhediya (2022), Munjya (2024), and Stree 2 (2024). Unlike its predecessors, Thamma is being pitched as less horror-comedy and more supernatural romance—an evolution in tone and stakes.

Fans will also spot a cameo: Varun Dhawan reprises his Bhediya character, hinting at tighter narrative interconnections within the shared universe.

Cast, Crew, and Stakes
Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar (who directed Munjya), Thamma brings together a high-profile ensemble: Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, Nawazuddin Siddiqui (as antagonist Yakshasan), Paresh Rawal, and more. The music duo Sachin–Jigar handles the soundtrack, with contributions from lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya.

The first single, Tum Mere Na Huye, was released ahead of the film, earning praise for Rashmika’s expressive performance and dance moves. Meanwhile, rumours have swirled that the film’s original title was Vampires of Vijaynagar, a name later changed to Thamma—a title some speculate may evoke mythological resonance with the character Ashwatthama.

Challenges, Hype, and Expectations
With a genre blend that is rare in Indian cinema, Thamma carries tremendous risk. Can audiences accept an Indian vampire love story? Can the film balance its supernatural scale with emotional resonance? The comparison of the trailer with Vampire Diaries shows how eager (and wary) fans are.

Ayushmann himself acknowledged the gamble, noting concerns about taboo or quirkiness that might alienate mainstream viewers. As for box office ambitions, the film is being sold aggressively, with hopes that its Diwali timing will amplify impact.

Critics and fans alike will be watching not just for scares, but for coherence, originality, and emotional payoff. If Thamma succeeds, it could reshape how Indian cinema treats supernatural romance—offering a blueprint for stories that draw from folklore without mimicking Western tropes.Diwali’s Darkest Night Awaits
In October, when families flood cinema halls after pujas and sweets, Thamma aims to stand out in a crowded festive slate. With mythology, mystery, and a love story veering into darkness, it promises to be unlike any Diwali release before. For Ayushmann, Maddock Films, and Indian genre cinema, all eyes will be on whether the gamble pays off—or whether this bold experiment becomes a curious footnote.
