A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines on Monday morning, prompting tsunami warnings for coastal areas of the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. According to initial reports, several houses have been damaged and one person has died.

The earthquake’s epicentre was located around 13 kilometres south-west of General Santos City on Mindanao Island. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. The United States Geological Survey recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 7.8 and a depth of 55 kilometres.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has warned that waves as high as 3 metres could hit some coastal areas of the Philippines. Parts of the Indonesian and Malaysian coastlines may also face tsunami waves of up to 1 metre.
